Do you really think they know how to use technology better than us. I guess it needs to be defined. They might know about itunes and game apps but do they really know how to use it to be productive and to learn

I believe in this technological world that we live in if is important that all people, regardless of age are aware of identity theft and the dangers of putting personal information on the internet. Many of us do online shopping or banking for that matter. How scary is the thought of someone getting access to your savings and checking accounts? I think many of us are to trustworthy of websites that say "secure site". How do you really know it is secure? You are just taking the sites word for it.
I think as educators it is our responsibility to ensure that our students are safe in the real world as well as the cyberworld. Many of our middle school aged students rely solely on social networking. As a result these students are putting to much information about themselves out there for the whole world to see. I feel some of these social networking sites often lead to trouble. So as far as I am concerned I stay away from them. Although I know it is going to be impossible to keep my kids away fom it when the time comes. Therefore, it is our jobs as parents and educators to inform our children of the importance fo keeping any personal infromation about themselves off these sites.

Let's put it this way, our students know how to use technology better than we do. The problem is that they are not being taught on how to be safe. What if we were to create a class to educate them on being safe digital citizens? Then, we could have them volunteer to run an after school program to educate senior citizens on how to use computers. I think this would be a great way to reinforce safe internet use and to publicize what students are learning in school to the senior citizens.

I certainly agree that students are growing up too fast. Although it annoys me when my 6th graders think only about their actions and not anyone else's feelings, I wouldn't mind them acting their age. Our students are maturing way too quickly and know certain words and "things" that I couldn't have thought up in my wildest dreams in middle school! Media combined with the Internet have caused this epidemic and outlets like Facebook can put our students in dangerous situations.

Just this past week (which it also started this week already) I have a male student and he wants to try out for the cheerleading team. Unfortunately, he has been made fun of quite a bit in school, but even more so on facebook to the point where he outwardly expressed thoughts of suicide. He is a great kid and fortunately enough has spoken to the principle, guidance counselor and many of his teachers, but for someone who is not that fortunate, facebook can be a brutal place.

Facebook is a little scary for me as a mother. I have a Facebook account but I have the privacy set high so only the people I allow to see can see it. However my 13 year old son wanted an account, so one of his friends set up an account for him. I was shocked when I read his page and what the 13 year old girls were writing on his page. He was unaware of what was on his page, I read it before him. Needless to say I nad him delete the posts and 'unfriend' those girls. I have been teaching both my son and husband about internet safety.

I think all ages should be cautious of Facebook and internet safety. Unfortunately people post items without thinking and the consequences can be severe. Not only do the youth need to be reminded of this but so do older adults. These two groups in particular seem be naive and forget about the dangers of internet predators.

I think this is a huge problem that effects all ages. The man in the video brings up the most important point. Use common sense. As adults, we should know not to post about vacations and new purchases, yet I know it happens. Parents who allow their children to have a facebook account need to monitor and educate them on the potential risks involved.

I totally agree that we need to change the infrastructure of our schools in order to successful incorporate collaboration. In my school, Middle school, the new buzz is group collaboration. Our literacy classrooms are in groups and have round tables to foster this thought of learning. In March, our math department was given a framework that was based on collaboration. I am hopeful that it is successful, but would like to see more coaching for the teachers.

I agree that facebook and a lot of other social networks can be dangerous. When I was younger, I didn't go on the computer as much as children do today. Children in Kindergarten know more than I did at their age about the computer. I think the video clip made very good points about identity theft and safety issues. I know that my own siblings go on facebook and share exactly what they are doing at every second of the day, which I have to admit scares me. I am not a fan of facebook because I don't feel the need to become friends online with people that I haven't talked to in years. People that know me, have my telephone number and email address, and they know how to contact me if they need me or want to talk. These are the people that I want to talk to, not the people that never kept in touch until facebook was invented. I think that people of all ages need to be aware of the danger that online networks can lead to, especially, if they share too much information and are not careful.
